Falcons varsity faced their old adversary LCC on Saturday, December 8 at the TPHS stadium.
“It was a tough draw facing our rivals in our first game” said Matty Sandoval, head coach.
And tough it was. LCC jumped to a 13-3 lead due to many penalties and mistakes. Coach Matty’s task was changing both the strategy and the tone at halftime. Sure enough, the Falcons came out roaring in the second half, tackling every Maverick that moved, running hard from the base, and keeping LCC under tremendous pressure that resulted in multiple LCC penalties in their half, which were turned into points.
TP Rugby took the lead on a nifty Oren Cargill “tap and go” from LCC’s 5 meter line, and with the conversion TP took the lead 16-13 with five minutes to go.
LCC tied it at 16 with a beautiful penalty kick of their own, and it became apparent that the next score would be the last, determining the victor. Again under pressure, LCC committed a penalty at their 20, and Cargill stepped up and slotted the 30 meter kick with less than 2 minutes remaining and the Falcons won by the final score of 19-16.
“Our defense won it for us, led by Nick Pauley and Jack Foate,” noted Coach Matty. Pauley, who moved from center to 8-man this year, was selected “man of the match” by the TP Rugby coaches.
